In Victoria Juemei Gong’s moving-image work, old myths and modern technology end up in the same room. She is interested in where ancient mythology, the occult, and present-day technology meet. Her real subject is the body: how it changes in altered states, and how digital images can trap and hold us.

Her films are layered out of image and sound, part theatre and part cinema. She works with expressionist staging, stop-motion, 3D animation, and live action to make images that feel ancient and high-tech at the same time. Sound surrounds the viewer and becomes part of the experience, so it is hard to tell where the film ends and the room begins.
