In Slavic folklore, the Nechist’ are the “unclean ones,” the spirits that live out in the water and the marsh, not quite devils and not quite ghosts. Veronika Kina grew up half-believing in them.
Her family, post-Soviet and not religious but deeply superstitious, took the old stories seriously, and as a child she was sure one of these creatures might be waiting for her.
She was born in Russia into a Ukrainian Jewish family, and the myths she read as a girl kept her up at night and stayed with her. With her camera she tries to catch the feeling those stories left behind, back when the world seemed both magical and frightening. She wants the pictures to feel less like fantasy and more like a distant memory, seen through the eyes of the child she used to be.
