This series began with Tashi Columbro’s grandmother, her yiayia, and the stories she told over coffee. Some were joyful: a Roma best friend, food taken from farms, dancing outside the taverna, a bus ride to her own wedding. Others were heavy, about war and about the hardship that pushed her to leave Greece for Australia, where loneliness and racism were waiting.
After her grandmother was gone, Columbro began painting the stories to keep them alive. Making the work helped her through the grief, and it got her thinking about her own Greek-Australian identity, and how much of it came from that first generation who left home.
She works in both painting and ceramics, staying open to accident and chance. Using family photos and her yiayia’s stories as her starting points, she digs into memory, belonging, and what it takes to carry a culture across the world.
