Why It Matters: A look at current Scottish work across painting, ceramics, and glass
Graystone Gallery in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge district opens its winter season with a wide-ranging group exhibition featuring nearly 40 artists. The show brings together painting, ceramics, and glass, moving from dramatic seascapes and Highland scenes to still life and abstract compositions. It’s a clear snapshot of how artists in Scotland are working right now, and it stays on view through mid-January.

Landscapes and Interiors
The exhibition moves between coastal views, studio setups, and domestic scenes. Kerry Souter’s mixed-media coastal works push the shoreline into textured, intuitive forms, while Jane Cruickshank focuses on precision and light, giving everyday objects a bright, almost heightened presence. Together, the works show how the same subjects can shift depending on the artist’s eye and approach.
Material Diversity
Ceramics and glass bring another layer to the presentation. Pauline Cumming contributes hand-built plates and pots inspired by 17th-century Delftware, featuring strong female figures painted in Delft blue. These sit alongside works by other ceramicists and glass artists, each exploring color, surface, and form in their own way. The mix gives the exhibition a tactile quality that plays well against the paintings on the walls.

Seasonal Context
The winter focus ties the show together, with many works reflecting Scotland’s light, weather, and interior spaces during the darker months. With so many artists included, the exhibition reads as both a seasonal gathering and a broad look at contemporary Scottish practice heading into the new year.
