Noah Schmitz makes paintings that are meant to look like something else entirely. Using nothing but paint, he mimics drawing, printmaking, tapestry, and collage so convincingly that you have to lean in close to catch that it’s all paint after all. The illusion is the whole point.
He never knows how a painting will end when he starts, because knowing would spoil the discovery. Each one begins as a drawing on paper and gets pushed and changed until it no longer resembles where it began. He lays down a neat, symmetrical pattern, then pulls it apart through repetition and distortion until the first image is gone.
Schmitz grew up in Massachusetts and came to New York to study painting at SUNY Purchase. He lives in Brooklyn and works in film production and art handling to keep the studio going.
