Nigel Waters is a painter based in Exeter, Devon. He studied fine art at Plymouth University and graduated with a first class honours degree in 2006. He paints the south west coast of England, seascapes and landscapes, always en plein air, always outside in it. He works in a semi-abstract expressionist style with colors that come from Fauvism, bright and pushed beyond what the eye actually sees.
He walks the South West Coast Path and paints what he finds. Each painting is a response to a specific day, a specific weather, a specific light. He painted Dawlish Towards Exmouth on the seafront in February. He painted The Yarty Valley from the top of a hill one mile from his studio in December. The cold, the wind, the salt air, all of it gets into the work.
He is an associate member of the Penwith Gallery in St Ives and is represented by Artisan Gallery in Exmouth. He has shown across the UK and internationally, in London, Sheffield, Halifax, St Ives, Milan, São Paulo and Slovenia. In 2026 he did a residency on Dartmoor at Bernards Acre Belstone, part funded by the Arts Council.
