Laura Clark

Before she was a painter, Laura Clark was a competitive swimmer, deep in a world of training and repetition. Painting turned out to be the exact opposite: loose, intuitive, open-ended. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, she now works out of Morristown, New Jersey, after spells in New York and Philadelphia.

Each canvas grows as she goes. She lays down washes of acrylic and loose marks, letting clear passages and uncertain ones sit side by side. Color drives much of it, and it usually comes straight from feeling, grief and memory included.

Clark plans almost nothing ahead of time. The structure appears on its own as she works, and what she wants most is a certain mood. She has shown at The Other Art Fair in Brooklyn and in small independent magazines, and she hopes each person finds their own meaning in the work.
