Keren Toledano is both a writer and a painter. She makes what she calls veil paintings by brushing thin layers of acrylic onto raw canvas and letting the color soak into the fabric. The color seems to come from inside the surface, and it looks different depending on the light and how close you stand.
She is interested in color and in how we see it. As she points out, the eye never sees one fixed color, only mixtures of light. She uses those small shifts of tone to tell a kind of story.
Toledano lives in Brooklyn and studied English at Harvard and arts and humanities at New York University. She shows with Anne Irwin Fine Art, Mont Art House, and Galerie Odette, and her work has appeared in Vogue, The New York Times, and AD.
