Julie Kopová
Julie Kopová studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and spent a semester in Gregor Hildebrandt’s class at the academy in Munich. After graduating, she went on to earn a master’s degree in philosophy at Charles University. “Painting is my way of thinking,” she says.

Philosophy shapes her work, especially Immanuel Kant’s idea of the sublime. She is interested in the point where something can no longer be fully pictured but can still be felt.

Kopová works with acrylic and oil pastel on large canvases. Her abstract paintings are made of bright color fields and loose, gestural brushwork. The physical movement of painting matters to her as much as any plan.

Her work was included in a Christie’s sale in Amsterdam in 2022, and a year later she was picked for the STRABAG Artaward International shortlist from 677 applicants. This year she took part in the Romantso residency in Athens and showed work at Czech Design Week in Prague and at Galerie Nola in Náchod.
