Gracelee Lawrence

To make her sculptures, Gracelee Lawrence scans her own body along with edible plants, then merges the two in software until they become a single shape. Many are printed in bioplastic made from GMO corn, which ties the work directly to questions about farming, food, and sustainability. Body, food, and technology all meet in the same object.
Lawrence has done more than twenty-two residencies and showed a second solo in New York at Postmasters in 2022, warmly reviewed by Roberta Smith in The New York Times. She is Head of Sculpture at the University at Albany, SUNY, with recent shows at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Wasserman Projects, and CHART, and large outdoor works at Wave Hill and Franconia Sculpture Park.
A member of the MATERIAL GIRLS collective, she holds a Jerome Fellowship and a Luce Scholarship, among other honors, and her work has been written about in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Hyperallergic. Away from the studio, she is a keen dancer, a lifelong horse person, and a devoted gardener.
