The Norton Museum of Art presents Danielle Mckinney: Shelter, a survey exhibition bringing together around 40 paintings and five watercolors from the past five years. It marks the artist’s most comprehensive museum presentation to date.

Mckinney’s paintings focus on solitary female figures in interior settings, often shown in moments of rest and reflection. Her work references portrait traditions and art history, with figures emerging from dark backgrounds that bring out light, color, and atmosphere.

The exhibition is part of the museum’s Recognition of Art by Women program, launched in 2011 to support major solo exhibitions by living women artists and to address gender imbalance in museum programming.

Running alongside, Recognition of Art by Women: In Retrospect brings together works by artists previously featured in the series, marking its tenth iteration.

After its presentation at the Norton Museum of Art, Danielle Mckinney: Shelter will travel to the New Orleans Museum of Art later in 2026.
