Why it Matters: A new gallery in Nashville connects postwar New York painting with the city’s growing contemporary art scene

Soulios Gallery opened in November at Nashville’s historic Cummins Station. Founded by collector and curator Steven Soulios, the gallery’s inaugural exhibition presents works by Arthur Robins, an artist associated with postwar New York and its urban experience.

Robins is known both for his paintings and for a landmark legal case that helped secure artists’ rights to sell work on the streets of New York. His paintings from the 1960s and 70s move between interior scenes and urban spaces, marked by tension, humor, and close attention to everyday life. Soulios first showed Robins’ work in the 1990s, and the exhibition also reflects a long personal and professional relationship.

The gallery plans to show national and international artists, with a focus on postwar and expressionist practices. Upcoming exhibitions include work by Matthias Duwel, and the gallery will represent the estates of Ewald Platte and Ma KeLu. Soulios launches the space together with his wife, Ana Soulios, with plans to open the gallery to performances, movement-based work, and inclusive programs for artists with disabilities.

Located near the Frist Art Museum, Soulios Gallery has added a new voice to Nashville’s arts landscape, with a program built around long-term relationships and sustained artistic practices.
