Fashion came first for Andrea Mindell Cohen. She ran her own label in Los Angeles, then moved to Barcelona to design graphics and textile prints for fashion brands. The displays and installations she built for trade fairs slowly led her to making her own art.
Today the Spanish-Canadian artist works in collage, painting, and printmaking, making large installations about gender, identity, family, and religion. Printed images of the body appear over and over in her work, and she still does much of the printing by hand on soak-stained fabric. She says the work is about memory and renewal, and about how people connect across time and place.
Cohen studied at Otis/Parsons in Los Angeles and at Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence. In 2022 she won first prize for figurative art at FIA Barcelona, and she has kept up her printmaking through residencies, including one at the Zaritsky Artists House in Tel Aviv.
