Sofia Gamiz’s vases have muscles. She makes ceramic vessels in the shape of bodybuilders, part of an ongoing cast of characters she calls the Señorísimas, or “ultimate ladies,” everyday women pushed toward humor and excess and then handed a physique. The pieces here come from a group called Lady’s Gym, eleven one-of-a-kind ceramics set in a bodybuilding world.

Built by hand, they lend big, powerful bodies to objects usually tied to women: vases, sculptures, ashtrays, teapots. The saturated colors let the muscle and the joke live together. In her hands the woman is the vase, and as Gamiz says, the body is the form.

Based in Mexico City and originally from Cuernavaca, Gamiz is largely self-taught and trained as a designer before turning to clay and paint. Her bodybuilding ceramics were recently included in a survey at one of Mexico’s most important craft museums. Her grandmothers, her mother, and the women of Mexico City are her constant reference points.
