Aimée Joaristi was born in Havana and left Cuba as a small child, when her parents moved to Madrid. She grew up in Spain, studied art and architecture there, and learned early to trust her intuition. Today she works in painting, installation, performance, photography, and video.
Her work is not meant to look like the real world. Some people connect it to neo-informalism, and she ties it to her Cuban background. Migration, women’s rights, and the harm done to nature are themes she comes back to again and again. As she puts it, “I recombine and construct new meanings, which is the starting point of any transformation.”
Joaristi's work has been shown at the Havana Biennial and at biennials in Chile, Italy, Ecuador, and Latvia. She won the Artist of the Future Award in 2020 and an emerging-artist award in Dubai in 2016, and her pieces are held in museums including the Wifredo Lam Museum in Cuba and the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas in Miami.
