Location: Eritage Studio Gallery, Lisbon

Date: October 9, 2026, through February 2027

Project:  BREATH, an exhibition on myth, plants and the body

Why it Matters: A women-only show at one of Lisbon’s independent galleries

BREATH opened this month at Eritage, with three artists from three continents: Brittany Ferns from Australia, Flora Castiglia from Argentina, and Loutje Hoekstra from the Netherlands.

Brittany Ferns
Brittany Ferns

Ferns is a self-taught painter from Newcastle. The ochres come from the Australian soil, and she stretches her own surfaces from linen, muslin and Japanese paper. She paints mermaids, sirens and other figures from folklore.

Flora Castiglia

Castiglia started out designing record sleeves in Buenos Aires. Her still lifes are flat and bright, with plants, leaves and mountains laid over patterns of stripes and grids.

Loutje Hoekstra

Hoekstra came to art from biology. She uses the body as her tool and paints with it directly, pressing herself to the canvas. The figures that come out are pale and x-ray-like, set into the room around them.

BREATH is on at Eritage Gallery in Lisbon, until February 2027.
