Why it Matters: Exceptional European and Asian sculptures from different centuries shown together in one space
In London, Stuart Lochhead Sculpture presents Spiritual Resonance, a focused exhibition of devotional works from Europe and Asia, made between the 7th and 18th centuries. The pieces were created long before museums or art fairs existed, and were once placed in churches, temples, and other ritual spaces.

A mid-18th-century Virgin of the Immaculate Conception from Bavaria opens the display. The figure turns slightly, wrapped in painted and gilded folds. A few steps away, a small bronze of Saint Francis, cast in Flanders in the late 1400s and attributed to Renier van Thienen, retains sharp, defined lines — part of a larger ensemble, now seen alone.

Two Thai bronzes bring different stages of Buddhist sculpture into view. A 14th-century Sukhothai head shows calm proportions and a softened surface. A much earlier figure from the Dvaravati Kingdom stands broader and heavier, its form more grounded.

The selection is compact. But across these few works, clear links emerge: in the way drapery turns, or how a figure holds its weight. Spiritual Resonance is the result of a collaboration between Nies Oriental Art and Stuart Lochhead Sculpture. It looks at how forms change across time, place, and material.
